In yesterday's news a new light of hope has been seen. The christmas celebrations in Downtown Beirut this year were exclusive. Regardless of how I may feel about demonstrations but indeed I was attracted to the way both Christians and Muslims shared the moments of celebration around the huge XMAS tree they planted and decorated. Seeing some Muslim girls wearing Santa Claus' hats will indeed be memorable and comments from some FPM activists saying that they will participate in slaughtering on the first day of Eid Al-Adha imposed themselves.
Unlike previous years, Al-Manar Television transmitted the midnight mass from Mar Georgious church in downtown Beirut, an observation that deserves a stop at here.
Although an indicator of unity which is something that Lebanon needs nowadays yet from one other perspective has sparked criticism particularly from Saudi commentators on Al-Arabiya channel's comment pane who consider that celebrating Christmas as forbidden in Islam. But hey gimmie a break, in Palestine both muslims and christians celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem and this can be seen in the annual mass at the church of nativity. Also in Jordan, I share the joyful moments of Christmas with all my christian friends and sometimes I tend to have a Christmas turkey of my own with the family as Christmas is a religious tradition we tend to celebrate in return to so many Christians sharing the joy of Eid el fitr and al adha with us muslims.
Why are these people always critical of anything joyful and uniting in the name of religion? Why do some of these people say something in public and go and do worse in secrecy? Aren't we allowed to enjoy our coexistance as one people in each of the Levant countries?
