LIFE AS AN ARAB
What do we, as the new generation want out of this life. Although said to be political but sometimes could not be.
IS FOOTBALL BECOMING A POLITICAL GAME?!
As I am preparing for my soon return to Jordan after having lived in the UK for almost 8 years completing my MSc and PhD, I just returned home after a huge shopping day and a chance to go around the city where I lived throughout that period to say Goodbye to all the places I am accustomed to.
I stopped in a very elegant yet popular pub called Wetherspoon's to have my favourite burger for lunch. Anybody who wishes to know more about the English society should always head for the pub. It does not necessarily require you to drink to visit the pub so simply consider it as a place to have a Coke or a cup of coffee. You find people there enjoying massive pints of beer from all ages and social slices yet united by this very English habit of beer drinking (usually not welcomed by our societies). People get to know each other in the pub in the UK. I myself met so many people in the pub just for being from the Middle East and had been always attractive to these people for one reason, their thirst to know more about the Middle East and Islam (even if over a pint of beer!!!!!!!).
Today I witnessed something that I personally found funny yet rose so many questions in my head. While enjoying my burger meal, I noticed a huge number of youngmen coming to the tables around mine; something rather unusual even if pubs are usually congested on Saturdays but not to the extent I saw today.
Without much astonishment, it was a football match between England and Scotland and as everyone knows football watching and talking is massively popular in Britain. Yet this particular match had a different taste for the fact that the teams playing come from the same nation (UK).
While observing the audience, tension could be noticed between English and Scottish lads although both bear the same passport. Within minutes an argument between a group of each side broke starting with the usual swearing vocabulary and almost ended in world war III. One of the guys came to the table where I was sitting and sat just right in front of me as though as I do not exist!! He pulled my ashtray and aimed at the guys whom he was fighting with and again others exchanged fire. Police was called and all these people were removed and two police cars guarded the pub in case more battles took place.
Watching this 'War' brought up so many questions into my head. As a lot of us presume, sports and education were supposed to unite the world and promote anti discrimination principles. Yet from a compiled personal experience, football seems to be an exception. I used to love football since a young age and always support teams that played the game best and assumed high sport morale unlike others that looked at the game as some pure nationalistic aspect.
What I saw reminded me of my time as an undergraduate in Jordan when I used to witness the brainless war between the fans of Al-Faisali and Al-Wehdat. Is it the game that is creating all this chaos or is it just the human nature. How can we reestablish sports as a medium for global unity rather than a forum for nationalistic slogans and promotion of racism/supremacism. Is football becoming politics? Loads of questions looking for opinions.

TH14, apologies. As I said in the blog either football or rugby do not interest me any longer so just saw a match on a green field and a ball kicked...:-)
This is not what the post is about though, it is about how sports, particularly football (and rugby), became more political and nationalistic rather than globalising and diminishing differences.
About Wetherspoons, I live in a small town and compared to other pubs, I found it in addition to another one named WALKABOUT to be more elegant. Just a personal observation.
